Mumbai: In a bid to enhance viewer trust and platform integrity, YouTube has announced stricter measures against misleading video titles and thumbnails, particularly targeting clickbait in India. The initiative aims to curb deceptive practices, especially in videos related to breaking news and current events.

The platform has labeled “egregious clickbait” as a key focus of its crackdown, citing examples such as misleading headlines like “BREAKING NEWS” or “The President Steps Down” that have no relevance to the video content.

The new enforcement guidelines will roll out incrementally over the coming months. Initially, violators will have their content removed without strikes being issued against their channels. This grace period is designed to give creators time to adapt to the updated rules. For now, the measures will apply only to new uploads, sparing existing content.

YouTube has highlighted violations such as videos claiming major political developments in their titles but failing to include them in the actual content. Similarly, thumbnails falsely advertising “top political news” without delivering such stories will also face removal.

This move follows growing concerns about the misuse of sensational headlines and visuals that exploit user curiosity without delivering promised value. The new policy emphasizes a balance between a video’s promotional appeal and its actual content.
