Mumbai: At a time when governments at Centre and state are doing their best to curb the spread of corornavirus, the women self help groups (WSHGs) n Latur in Marathwada region of the state have come forward to manufacture masks.

Women from as many as 65 WSHGs from the district are engaged in making quality face masks for people, so as to ensure that there is no dearth of this product in days to come.
All these WSHGs are working under the aegis of Maharashtra Gramin Jeevan Unnati Abhiyan and they have made whopping 3.5 lakh masks. A total of 600 women of the SHGs are being credited for making the masks.

With this feat, Latur district has emerged as the first district in the state to manufacture and sell masks in such a huge quantity.

The women from SHGs are mostly involved in preparing pickles, papads and other edible products. However, it is for the first time that the women were encouraged to come forward and make fine quality masks which are in less number in the state.

The Maharashtra Government has made wearing masks compulsory for those who venture out of their houses, and those who are found without it have been penalised.
