As the nation anticipates the announcement of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections today, discussions surrounding the concept of ‘One Nation, One Election’ have gained traction. The committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind has submitted its report on the matter, fueling speculation that Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections could be synchronized.

The prospect of holding Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections concurrently is being considered, with the possibility of announcing dates for assembly elections in five states alongside the Lok Sabha polls. The announcement is scheduled for 3 o’clock today.

The legislative assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim are set to conclude their terms on various dates in June. With Lok Sabha elections slated for April-May, there is a potential scenario where both Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly elections could coincide in these states.

In Jammu and Kashmir, last year’s Supreme Court directive mandated assembly elections to be held in September 2024. However, the central government has not officially confirmed holding elections in April-May. Since the abrogation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir underwent reorganization, resulting in the creation of two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. If elections align with the Lok Sabha polls, it will mark the first election post the Article 370 revocation. Notably, the number of Vidhan Sabha seats has increased from 83 to 90 after the reorganization.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its candidates for the Legislative Assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh, confirming that these polls will coincide with the Lok Sabha elections. In 2019, Assembly elections were conducted alongside the Lok Sabha polls in Andhra Pradesh.

As the nation awaits the official announcement, the potential synchronization of Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections reflects ongoing efforts to streamline the electoral process and promote efficiency in governance.
