With the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, the question on everyone’s mind is: who will lead the government now?
Delhi minister Atishi has made it clear that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor will not be resigning, asserting that Kejriwal will continue as the Chief Minister and run the government, even from behind bars.
“We have always said that Arvind Kejriwal will run the government from jail. He will remain the CM of Delhi. We have filed a case in the Supreme Court. Our lawyers are reaching SC. We will demand SC have an urgent hearing tonight,” Atishi affirmed.
Earlier in the day, ED officials had interrogated Kejriwal for over two hours in the case. This questioning followed the Delhi High Court’s denial of protection from coercive action by the agency for the AAP convenor.
The Enforcement Directorate had issued nine summons to Kejriwal, urging him to appear for questioning regarding issues such as the formulation of the now-scrapped excise policy, pre-finalization meetings, and allegations of bribery.
Kejriwal’s arrest adds another layer of complexity to the case, as he becomes the third AAP leader to face arrest in connection with it. Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh were previously arrested in the same case.
Sisodia, who once held 18 portfolios and served as deputy CM, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26 last year, followed by an arrest by the ED a month later.
As Delhi grapples with this sudden turn of events, uncertainty looms over the leadership of the capital city. The outcome of the legal battle and the Supreme Court’s response to the AAP’s plea for an urgent hearing will ultimately determine the path forward for Delhi’s governance amidst these turbulent times.
