New Delhi: Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, questioning her claims in Parliament that there has been no rise in unemployment or prices.

“I don’t know which planet she is living on. She is saying there is no inflation, there is no rise in unemployment, there is no rise in prices,” Priyanka Gandhi told reporters after the Parliament session concluded.

Her sharp criticism came after Sitharaman’s speech in the Rajya Sabha, where she defended the Union Budget 2024-25 and emphasized its vision of making India a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047. The Finance Minister underscored key budgetary allocations for sectors such as agriculture, MSMEs, and rural development, claiming that the government has successfully maintained economic stability.

Sitharaman also highlighted the reduction in indirect taxes under the Goods and Services Tax (GST), stating that the average tax under the previous indirect tax regime stood at 15.8%, which has now come down to 11.3% under GST. Responding to a query from AITC MP Nadimul Haque, she asserted that GST Council decisions have led to a significant decline in tax rates over time.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi left Parliament along with her brother and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will reconvene on February 13 (Thursday) after a break for Guru Ravidas Jayanti.
