New Delhi: The southwest monsoon is likely to arrive in Kerala on May 27, five days earlier than its usual onset date of June 1, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted. This early onset marks a crucial transition from the summer heat to the rainy season across India and is expected to significantly benefit Kharif crop sowing, giving farmers a much-needed early start.

The onset over Kerala is considered the official beginning of monsoon in India and paves the way for its northward progression across the subcontinent. Based on the IMD’s latest projections, the timeline for the monsoon’s arrival across major Indian cities has now been outlined:

  • Mumbai & Kolkata: Monsoon likely between June 10–15
  • Hyderabad: Expected between June 5–10
  • Bengaluru & Chennai: Between June 1–5
  • Ahmedabad: Around June 15–20
  • Jaipur & Delhi: Between June 25–30

The IMD emphasized the importance of this forecast for various sectors, especially agriculture, stating that early rains could improve water availability and planting conditions.

The monsoon generally covers the entire country by July 8, and its progress is closely monitored by meteorologists, farmers, and government planners alike. Since 2005, the IMD has used a state-of-the-art statistical model to predict monsoon onset over Kerala, with a forecast margin of ±4 days. This model has proven highly reliable, missing the mark only once in 2015, when the onset occurred on June 5, beyond the predicted range.
