Details of a pivotal meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray on June 8, 2021, have emerged, shedding light on a significant juncture in Maharashtra’s political landscape. Uddhav Thackeray, serving as Chief Minister at the time, presented 12 demands to Prime Minister Modi during the meeting, touching upon crucial issues such as Maratha reservation, OBC reservation in local bodies, and reservation in promotions. The meeting, attended by key figures including Ajit Pawar and Ashok Chavan, also saw a private 10-minute discussion between Modi and Thackeray, details of which have surfaced for the first time.

According to NCP state president Sunil Tatkare, who revealed the undisclosed details during a TV9 Marathi conclave, Uddhav Thackeray was reportedly inclined to align with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the meeting with Prime Minister Modi. Tatkare claimed that Thackeray’s intent to leave the government and join the BJP was thwarted by Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut.

Tatkare alleged that Sanjay Raut himself shared this information, indicating a rift within the Shiv Sena regarding its alliance preferences. The revelation suggests diverging currents within the party, with one faction advocating for a continued alliance with the BJP while the other supported the Mahavikas Aghadi coalition.

A subsequent meeting involving Eknath Shinde, Milind Narvekar, Ajit Pawar, and Sunil Tatkare, at the insistence of Sanjay Raut, further deliberated on the implications of Thackeray’s interaction with Modi. While the specifics of these discussions remain undisclosed, Tatkare maintained that it was Raut who disclosed Thackeray’s contemplation of joining the BJP.

The revelation adds a new dimension to Maharashtra’s political dynamics, highlighting the complex negotiations and internal divisions within the Shiv Sena. As Uddhav Thackeray’s government navigates the intricacies of coalition politics, the disclosure of these discussions underscores the volatility and uncertainty inherent in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
