Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Thursday reacted to the Centre’s decision to conduct a nationwide caste census, calling it a welcome move while urging the government to ensure it is done through a structured and expert-driven process.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event, CM Revanth Reddy said, “Under pressure, today, central govt has taken this decision. We won’t do politics at this point. We welcome this decision under the leadership of PM Modi.” However, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for institutional backing to the exercise, suggesting the formation of two committees to ensure the credibility of the process.

“We request that if they really want to conduct caste sensus, they should constitute a committee of union cabinet ministers and then an expert committee and conduct a study,” he said.

Reddy’s remarks come amid a growing chorus of support for a nationwide caste census, a demand first prominently raised by opposition parties including the Congress. While welcoming the Centre’s decision, he highlighted that mere announcements must be backed by methodical planning and policy intent.

Political observers see the Centre’s move as significant, especially in the backdrop of the Bihar government’s own caste survey and subsequent public and political discourse around social justice and resource distribution.

Several opposition leaders have also reacted to the announcement, with Congress and regional party leaders suggesting that public pressure and ground-level movements may have compelled the central government to act. However, questions remain over the timeline, methodology, and transparency of the process — aspects Reddy’s remarks appear to address.
