Murshidabad: Tensions continue to mount in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district over the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill, as fresh allegations emerge of communal targeting and forced displacement. Former Infosys CFO and social commentator Mohandas Pai took to social media to publicly criticize Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of silence in the face of escalating violence.
Sharing a video showing distressed residents crossing the Bhagirathi River to seek refuge in Malda district, Pai wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “This is very wrong. CM @MamataOfficial is CM of all Bengal, not one community. Should protect life, liberty and property of all citizens.”
According to a News18 report, several hundred people from the Dhulian area of Murshidabad have fled their homes and are currently taking shelter in schools and public buildings across the river in Malda. Many displaced individuals said they feared for their lives amid reports of targeted attacks.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari further escalated the matter by stating that “over 400 Hindus were forced to flee due to attacks by religiously driven bigots.” He accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of emboldening radical elements through “appeasement politics.”
In a strongly worded statement, Adhikari claimed, “Religious persecution in Bengal is real. Women and girls were molested, people were dragged out of homes, beaten, and their properties attacked. Crude bombs were hurled, homes set on fire, and even police vehicles were not spared.”
