Mumbai: Renowned actor Achyut Potdar passed away on August 18 at a hospital in Thane, Mumbai, at the age of 91. The cause of his death has not been disclosed. His passing has left the Hindi and Marathi film industries in shock.
Potdar was admitted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane due to certain health complications but could not be saved. His last rites are scheduled to be held on August 19 in Mumbai.
Filmmaker Hansal Mehta paid tribute to the veteran actor, recalling working with him in his debut film as a director, Jayate. Mehta said: “I was a fan of his character as Jaggu dada’s father. The line ‘Ae Jaggu’ from ‘Angaar’ made me his permanent fan. He played a professional medical witness in ‘Jayate’ with amazing timing and a super caustic sense of humour. Go well Achyut Potdar sir.”
Born in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Potdar belonged to a Marathi Brahmin family. He graduated in Economics in 1961 and served in the Indian Army through an emergency commission during the India-China war, retiring as a Captain in 1967.
Following his military career, he joined Indian Oil Corporation, serving as an executive for 25 years until his retirement in 1992. During this period, he actively participated in cultural and theatrical activities, paving the way for his acting career.
Potdar made his film debut in 1980 with the critically acclaimed movie Aakrosh, starring Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, and Smita Patil. Over his illustrious career, he acted in over 125 Hindi and Marathi films, including memorable roles in 3 Idiots, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Rangeela, Parineeta, Vaastav, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator.
He also appeared in television shows like Wagle Ki Duniya, Majha Hoshil Na, Mrs Tendulkar, and Bharat Ki Khoj, showcasing his versatility across mediums. Fans and colleagues alike have expressed deep sorrow over his demise, celebrating a life dedicated to cinema, theatre, and public service.
