Venezuela Devastated by Twin Powerful Earthquakes; Buildings Collapse in Caracas, At Least 32 Dead

Venezuela has been hit by two powerful earthquakes within minutes of each other, leaving at least 32 people dead and causing significant destruction across the country, particularly in the capital city of Caracas.

Strong Tremors Trigger Panic and Destruction

According to preliminary reports, the first earthquake measured 7.2 in magnitude and struck near the western region of Moron, approximately 168 kilometres from Caracas. Just one minute later, a second and even stronger quake measuring 7.5 shook the same area, intensifying the devastation.

The back-to-back tremors sent residents rushing into the streets as buildings swayed violently and several structures suffered severe damage.

State of Emergency Declared

Acting President Delcy Rodriguez announced a nationwide state of emergency following the disaster. Emergency teams have been deployed to affected regions to search for survivors, assist injured residents, and assess the extent of the destruction.

Authorities warned that casualty figures could rise as rescue operations continue in heavily damaged areas.

Caracas Airport Shut After Damage

The powerful earthquakes also affected critical infrastructure. Officials confirmed that Simon Bolivar International Airport in Caracas has been temporarily closed after sustaining damage during the tremors.

Transportation and communication services have been disrupted in several regions, complicating relief efforts.

USGS Warns of Widespread Impact

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquakes were strong enough to cause extensive destruction and warned that the disaster could have a broad regional impact.

Experts indicated that high casualties and severe structural damage were likely due to the strength of the quakes and their proximity to populated areas.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Emergency responders, military personnel, and disaster management teams are continuing rescue and relief operations across affected regions. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks and follow official safety instructions.

As Venezuela begins assessing the full scale of the disaster, the nation faces a major humanitarian and recovery challenge in the days ahead.
