Tamil Nadu politics witnessed fresh political speculation on Thursday after Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan suggested that the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could join hands in the future, even as he reaffirmed his party’s current support for Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s government.
His remarks came shortly after the Congress decided to align with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) following the recent Assembly elections, a move that has reshaped political equations in the state.
‘DMK Has Allied With BJP Before’
Addressing a public event in Tiruchirappalli, Thirumavalavan said the VCK entered into an alliance with the DMK solely because of its opposition to the BJP.
Recalling past political developments, he noted that the DMK had previously been part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government headed by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
He said, “Even if the DMK opposed the BJP out of political compulsion, as long as it stands against the BJP, we will stand with the DMK. Tomorrow, it may join hands with the BJP; that is a different matter. It has allied with the BJP in the past as well; that is also a different matter.”
Support Linked to BJP Opposition
The VCK chief clarified that his party’s backing for the DMK depends entirely on its continued opposition to the BJP.
He stated, “But as long as the DMK remains opposed to the BJP, it will continue to have our support. We joined hands with the DMK to strongly oppose the BJP. We need its strength for that purpose, and our decisions have been based on that principle. People may keep saying whatever they want; it makes no difference to us.”
His remarks came in response to criticism that the VCK had been distancing itself from the DMK.
Political Equations in Tamil Nadu Continue to Shift
The statement has added another dimension to Tamil Nadu’s evolving political landscape, particularly after Congress chose to align with actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
While Thirumavalavan reiterated that the VCK remains committed to the DMK alliance for now, his observation about a possible future understanding between the DMK and BJP has sparked fresh debate over the state’s political alignments ahead of future elections.
At present, neither the DMK nor the BJP has responded to Thirumavalavan’s remarks.
Why did Thol Thirumavalavan mention a possible DMK-BJP alliance?
He said the DMK had previously allied with the BJP and suggested such a political arrangement could happen again in the future.
Is the VCK leaving the DMK alliance?
No. Thirumavalavan said the VCK will continue supporting the DMK as long as it remains opposed to the BJP.
Why is the VCK allied with the DMK?
According to Thirumavalavan, the alliance was formed primarily to oppose the BJP.
Has the DMK been part of the NDA before?
Yes. The DMK was part of the BJP-led NDA government during former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure.
Has the DMK reacted to these remarks?
No official response had been issued by the DMK at the time of publication.
