The Uttar Pradesh government, under CM Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, has declared November 25 as a “no non-veg day” across the state to honor the birth anniversary of Sadhu TL Vaswani. This decision mandates the closure of meat shops and slaughterhouses on this date.
Sadhu Thanwardas Lilaram Vaswani, a prominent Indian educationist known for spearheading the Mira Movement in Education and founding St. Mira’s School, is commemorated on this day. Pune’s Darshan Museum stands as a testament to his life and teachings.
November 25 is globally observed as International Meatless Day in recognition of Sadhu Vaswani’s legacy.
This announcement follows the recent Uttar Pradesh government’s directive prohibiting the production, storage, distribution, and sale of food items without halal certification, citing concerns about “malicious attempts” and “pre-planned strategies” orchestrated by “anti-national elements.”
In tandem with this directive, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) conducted raids, including one at a McDonald’s outlet in Lucknow. The inspection uncovered Halal-certified products in packaged wraps, leading to heightened scrutiny of these items.
Additionally, raids at Sahara Mall in Lucknow uncovered eight companies selling Halal-certified products, resulting in legal action against them by the authorities.
