Over 31,000 Waqf Property Entries Removed in Uttar Pradesh After Major Verification Drive Uncovers Irregularities

Massive Scrutiny of Waqf Records Triggers Cancellations

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have removed more than 31,000 Waqf property registrations from the Centre’s digital Umeed portal after a large-scale verification process uncovered serious inconsistencies in land and ownership records.

Officials involved in the review said thousands of entries were cancelled after discrepancies emerged during cross-checking of property details submitted through the online system.

Thousands of Waqf Claims Rejected

According to officials, registrations linked to 31,328 Waqf properties have so far been cancelled from the portal. Out of these, claims associated with more than 31,000 properties were reportedly rejected after document verification failed to establish accurate ownership or land details.

The action forms part of an ongoing statewide audit of Waqf properties aimed at identifying disputed or incorrectly registered assets.

Revenue Records and Plot Details Did Not Match

Officials said several applications contained major mismatches involving plot numbers, land area measurements and ownership documentation.

In multiple cases, Khasra numbers mentioned in submitted records allegedly did not correspond with official land data maintained by Waqf authorities and local revenue departments.

Authorities also flagged inconsistencies in land size declarations, raising concerns regarding the authenticity of several uploaded records.

Centre’s Umeed Portal Under Focus

The Centre launched the Umeed portal — Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development — as part of a nationwide initiative to digitise and geotag Waqf properties across India.

The portal was designed to create a centralised digital database intended to improve transparency, strengthen monitoring and reduce disputes involving Waqf assets.

Under existing rules, all Waqf properties are required to be uploaded onto the portal within six months of its rollout.

Legal Debate Over Waqf Digitisation Continues

The verification exercise comes amid continuing legal and political debate surrounding amendments to Waqf-related regulations and the mandatory online registration process.

Recently, the Supreme Court of India declined requests seeking an extension of the deadline for uploading records on the portal. The court observed that parties facing technical or documentation-related issues could approach Waqf Tribunals individually for relief.

More Properties Likely to Face Verification

Officials indicated that scrutiny of Waqf assets is expected to continue across districts in the coming months, with additional properties likely to undergo document verification.

Disputed or contested claims may eventually be referred to Waqf Tribunals for detailed adjudication and legal examination.
