UP Panchayat Elections Likely Delayed as Final Voter List Postponed Till June 10

The Uttar Pradesh Panchayat elections are unlikely to be held within the expected May–June schedule after the State Election Commission postponed the publication of the final voter list to June 10, creating uncertainty over the timing of the rural polls.

Final Voter List Postponed Again

The final voter list was originally expected to be published on April 22, but the State Election Commission has now extended the process yet again. This marks the fifth extension in the schedule, making it increasingly difficult to hold Panchayat elections on time.

Officials said that voter data computerisation and removal of duplicate names will continue from April 21 to May 28. After that, election officials will carry out polling booth mapping, ward numbering and document verification from May 29 to June 9, with the final voter list to be released on June 10.

Delay Casts Doubt on Election Timeline

The repeated delays have raised serious questions over whether elections for Gram Pradhan, Kshetra Panchayat and Zila Panchayat seats can be held in May or June as earlier expected.

The voter list was initially supposed to be released in January, but the deadline has been pushed back multiple times. Candidates preparing for the elections are now facing growing uncertainty over when the polls will actually be conducted.

Over 12 Crore Voters in Draft List

The provisional voter list released earlier by the commission included around 12.69 crore voters, which was over 40 lakh more than the number recorded during the previous Panchayat elections in 2022.

However, a large number of objections and claims were filed after the draft publication, slowing down the finalisation process and leading to repeated extensions.

Legal Proceedings Add More Uncertainty

The issue is also being heard by the Allahabad High Court, where a petition seeking timely Panchayat elections remains pending.

The High Court had asked the Election Commission whether it was prepared to conduct elections on time, but hearings have been repeatedly deferred, adding another layer of uncertainty to the poll schedule.

Petitioners argue that under constitutional provisions, Panchayats cannot continue beyond their fixed term and that delaying elections further may violate the Constitution.

OBC Reservation Issue Still Pending

Another key hurdle is the pending formation of the OBC Commission, which is required to finalise reservation of seats in Panchayat elections.

Until the commission is formed and district-wise reservation is determined, the election notification cannot move forward. This process may take several more months, making a timely election increasingly unlikely.

Elections May Be Pushed to Next Year

With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, political observers believe the government may prefer to avoid Panchayat elections this year.

Local body elections often trigger factional conflicts and grassroots tensions that can affect party structures ahead of Assembly elections.

Because of the pending voter list, court matters and reservation process, there is increasing speculation that the Panchayat elections may now be pushed to early next year, with administrators handling Panchayat responsibilities until then.
