Prayagraj – A stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela on Mauni Amavasya, January 29, has raised concerns over crowd management at one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath closely monitor the situation and express condolences for the victims, UP Minister of Fisheries Sanjay Nishad has sparked controversy with his remarks on the incident.

Speaking to the media in Hardoi, Nishad downplayed the stampede, saying, “The Mahakumbh is a huge event with millions of devotees, so small incidents can happen. The Chief Minister is personally monitoring the situation.” His statement, describing such tragedies as “chhoti-moti ghatnaein” (minor incidents), has drawn criticism.

The Nishad Party chief also advised pilgrims not to panic and urged them to bathe wherever space was available, saying, “Avoid rumors, bathe wherever possible.” He insisted that devotees should not believe in misinformation about the situation at the Kumbh Mela and should proceed with their rituals calmly.

Despite his initial remark, Nishad later expressed sorrow over the tragedy, calling it unfortunate. He urged people to maintain peace and avoid overcrowding by using alternative ghats for the holy dip.

As per reports, by noon, over 40 million devotees had taken part in the Amrit Snan (holy bath) at the Triveni Sangam. Meanwhile, authorities continue to assess the situation, ensuring that safety measures are reinforced to prevent further incidents.
