Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday unveiled several initiatives to enhance passenger amenities, emphasizing inclusivity and convenience, especially for economically weaker sections. Speaking during the debate on the Railways (Amendment) Bill 2024 in the Lok Sabha, Vaishnaw outlined significant measures to improve unreserved passenger travel and operational efficiency. The Bill was later passed by the House.
Among the highlights, Vaishnaw announced a manufacturing program to produce 12,000 general coaches aimed at catering to unreserved passengers. He revealed that 900 of these coaches have already been added this financial year, with plans to manufacture an additional 10,000 soon. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to balance accessibility and comfort, maintaining a 2:3 ratio of non-AC to AC coaches.
Addressing concerns raised by members about potential privatization of the Railways, Vaishnaw dismissed such claims as a “fake narrative,” underscoring the Railways’ commitment to public service.
The Minister also detailed the Railways’ extensive preparations for the upcoming Mahakumbh, where 13,000 special trains are planned to accommodate the anticipated surge in passengers. This effort demonstrates a focused approach to serving middle-class and economically weaker families during high-demand periods.
Vaishnaw highlighted the Railways’ commitment to safety, transparency, and operational excellence, showcasing innovations in infrastructure and train services. He stressed the importance of balancing the needs of various passenger segments while ensuring affordability and accessibility.
The announcements reflect the Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernize while staying true to its mission of serving all sections of society.
