New Delhi: Amid ongoing tensions between Tamil Nadu and the Centre over the three-language policy, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has urged the state to look beyond political differences and implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the best interest of students.

In a letter addressed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, a copy of which he shared on X, Pradhan criticized the DMK-led government for opposing the policy and termed it a “myopic vision” that turns progressive reforms into political debates. He emphasized that NEP 2020 does not impose any language but instead offers a broad educational framework, which many non-BJP states have implemented despite political differences.

Pradhan stated that Tamil is not just a regional identity but a national treasure, ensuring that the NEP strengthens the teaching of Indian languages, including Tamil, which have been sidelined in formal education over the years. He reiterated that linguistic freedom is central to NEP 2020, allowing students to continue learning in the language of their choice while also benefiting from additional language skills.

Referring to the three-language formula, which has been part of India’s education framework since 1968, Pradhan pointed out that its incomplete implementation led to a decline in Indian language education and an over-reliance on foreign languages. He added that NEP 2020 aims to correct this historical oversight and ensure that every Indian language, including Tamil, finds its rightful place in education.

Acknowledging Tamil Nadu’s role as a pioneer in social and educational reforms, Pradhan expressed concern that continued opposition to NEP 2020 was depriving students, teachers, and institutions in the state of the immense opportunities and resources it offers. He assured that the policy is flexible, allowing states to customize its implementation to suit their unique educational needs. He also highlighted that centrally-supported programs such as Samagra Shiksha and PM SHRI Schools are aligned with NEP 2020 to enhance education quality across the country.

The Minister also underscored the Modi government’s various initiatives to promote Tamil, reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to preserving regional languages while modernizing education. With Tamil Nadu continuing to resist the three-language policy, the debate over NEP 2020 remains a key issue between the state and the Centre as both sides remain firm on their positions.
