New Delhi: In a major pro-citizen move aimed at easing access to education and welfare schemes, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has waived charges for Aadhaar Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBU) for children aged 7 to 15 years. The decision, effective from October 1, 2025, will remain in force for one year and is expected to benefit nearly 6 crore children across the country.

Under existing Aadhaar rules, children enrolled before the age of five are required to undergo two biometric updates — first at the age of 5 and again at 15 — because biometrics for children under five are not captured during initial Aadhaar enrollment.

While Aadhaar updates between 5–7 years and 15–17 years were already free, the UIDAI has now further waived the ₹125 fee that was applicable for those updating after the free window period. With this change, biometric updates for all children in the 5–17 age group are now free of cost.

UIDAI stated that updated biometrics play a crucial role in ensuring seamless access to services such as: School admissions, Entrance exam registrations, Scholarship applications, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes, and Other Aadhaar-linked welfare benefits

Parents and guardians have been advised to update their children’s biometric details as a priority to avoid authentication issues in future services.

The initiative strengthens Aadhaar’s role in simplifying citizen services and ensuring smooth welfare delivery for millions of students nationwide.
