Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has vehemently criticized the recent verdict by the Assembly Speaker, asserting that the recognition of Eknath Shinde’s faction as the genuine Shiv Sena is an egregious blow to democracy. Thackeray, who stepped down from office in 2022 amidst a rebellion led by Shinde with BJP support, contends that the ruling not only undermines democratic principles but also disparages the authority of the Supreme Court.
Expressing disbelief and strong opposition to the Speaker’s decision, Thackeray emphasized the apparent inconsistencies in the ruling. He questioned why, if Shinde’s faction represents the authentic Shiv Sena, they did not initiate the disqualification of members from Thackeray’s faction, highlighting what he perceives as a lack of coherence within the verdict.
Thackeray’s scathing critique further pointedly accuses the Assembly Speaker of misconstruing the mandate entrusted to him. He argued that while the Supreme Court had provided a framework, the Speaker, in his opinion, deviated from it, seemingly placing himself above the jurisdiction of the apex court and delivering a judgment based on his own interpretation.
This vocal dissent by Uddhav Thackeray underscores the deepening rift within the Shiv Sena, intensifying the discord between factions led by him and Eknath Shinde. The rejection of the verdict and the impending move to approach the Supreme Court signify a protracted legal battle that could significantly impact Maharashtra’s political landscape, fostering uncertainty and challenging the legitimacy of the Speaker’s ruling.
