Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib has secured bail in the AI Summit protest case after a Delhi court declined the police request to extend his custody. The order was passed by the Duty Magistrate at Patiala House Court, granting him relief on a personal bond of ₹50,000.
Court Refuses Extended Custody
The Delhi Police Crime Branch had sought an additional seven days of police remand, arguing that further interrogation was necessary. Applications were also filed seeking custody of two other individuals linked to the same protest.
However, after hearing arguments from both sides, the court ruled that investigators failed to provide convincing grounds to justify continued detention. As a result, the plea for extended custody was rejected.
Bail Conditions Imposed
While granting bail, the court directed Chib to deposit his passport and hand over his electronic devices. These conditions were imposed to ensure cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
Background of the Protest
Chib was arrested on February 24 following a protest during the AI Summit at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital. The demonstration reportedly involved a shirtless protest inside the summit venue, leading to swift police action.
He was earlier remanded to four days of police custody before being produced again in court.
Serious Charges Listed in FIR
The First Information Report (FIR) includes several charges such as criminal conspiracy, obstructing public servants, unlawful assembly, disobedience of official orders, and allegations related to promoting enmity and actions deemed harmful to national integration.
Congress Slams Arrest
The Indian National Congress strongly criticized the arrest, calling it unconstitutional and an attempt to suppress democratic dissent. In a public statement, the party asserted that peaceful protest is a constitutional right and vowed to continue raising public concerns without fear.
