Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday strongly endorsed the Supreme Court’s refusal to grant bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots case, using the verdict to launch a sharp political attack on the Congress. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said the court’s observations had exposed what he described as the “real nature” of the accused and those who supported them.
Reacting to the ruling, Poonawalla claimed that Khalid and Imam were portrayed as activists despite facing serious allegations under anti-terror laws. He alleged that the Congress and its affiliated groups had consistently defended individuals accused in cases related to national security, calling it a pattern rather than an isolated incident.
The BJP leader further asserted that the Supreme Court’s remarks had validated the prosecution’s case, pointing out that the court found the roles of Khalid and Imam to be “central” and distinct from other accused who were granted conditional bail. He alleged that the violence in northeast Delhi was “planned and orchestrated,” rejecting claims that it was spontaneous.
Poonawalla also demanded a public apology from the Congress, accusing the party of lending political and moral support to those facing grave charges in connection with the riots. He claimed the verdict would cause discomfort to what he termed “anti-national elements” and their supporters.
Earlier in the day, a bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria denied bail to Khalid and Imam, while granting conditional bail to five other accused in the case. The court noted that the evidence against Khalid and Imam placed them on a different footing compared to others.
Meanwhile, Umar Khalid’s father, Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas, declined to react to the verdict, saying he had nothing to add after hearing the judgment. The 2020 violence in northeast Delhi had claimed over 50 lives and left hundreds injured during protests linked to the Citizenship Amendment Act.
