US President Donald Trump has declared that the ceasefire with Iran is effectively over following fresh American strikes, while maintaining that diplomatic engagement could still continue despite expressing little confidence in its success.
Speaking on the sidelines of the two-day NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump said he no longer believed the ceasefire remained in effect, describing further engagement with Iran as unproductive. He remarked that, in his view, “it’s over” and added that “it’s just a waste of time dealing with them.” He nevertheless noted that US representatives were free to continue negotiations, but insisted, “They can talk, but I think they’re wasting their time.”
Trump’s remarks came just hours after the United States launched strikes on Iran, which Washington said were carried out in retaliation for attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
His comments signal a tougher US position amid heightened tensions in the region, with uncertainty growing over whether diplomatic efforts can prevent further escalation.
