The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is gearing up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections with a grand launch event, the ‘Jana Garjan Sabha,’ set to take place at Kolkata’s historic Brigade Parade Grounds on Sunday. The party will also unveil its list of 42 candidates for the polls during this rally, setting the stage for a heated electoral battle in West Bengal.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee are poised to headline the mega rally, aiming to rally supporters and set the tone for the party’s campaign.
In anticipation of the event, Mamata Banerjee took to X (formerly known as Twitter), rallying the people of Bengal to join the march for their rights. She emphasized the strength and resolve of Bengal, warning against mistaking patience for weakness and calling for a united movement for the state’s secure future.
The rally is expected to draw an impressive crowd, with Abhishek Banerjee predicting attendance from around six to eight lakh supporters and numerous block-level leaders from various districts.
However, the TMC’s show of strength has drawn criticism from political rivals, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari derided the rally as the TMC’s “farewell rally,” labeling its leaders as “goons and corrupt” and predicting their “impending downfall.”
The timing of the rally coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Bengal, where he launched scathing attacks on the TMC-led government. Accusing the party of “looting” the people of Bengal, Modi highlighted alleged corruption and mismanagement, aiming to bolster support for the BJP in the upcoming elections.
Among his accusations, Modi claimed that the TMC government had manipulated the MNREGA scheme, diverting funds meant for the poor to benefit select individuals associated with the party.
As political tensions escalate in West Bengal, the Jana Garjan Sabha marks the beginning of what promises to be a fiercely contested electoral campaign, with both the TMC and BJP vying for supremacy in the state.
