A catastrophic fire engulfed two paint and chemical godowns in outer Delhi’s Alipur on Thursday evening, claiming the lives of 11 individuals and leaving four others injured, according to reports from ANI citing the fire department.

The incident, which occurred in the bustling industrial area, was preceded by a blast, suspected to have been triggered by the chemicals stored within the factory premises, as stated by the Delhi Police.

Upon receiving a distress call at 5:25 pm, the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) swiftly dispatched at least 22 fire tenders to combat the inferno. Despite their concerted efforts, the blaze raged on for several hours before being brought under control around 9 pm. Currently, authorities are engaged in a cooling-off operation to ensure there is no risk of reignition.

The deceased have been transported to Babu Jagjeevan Ram Hospital, while the injured have been admitted to Raja Harish Chandra Hospital for medical treatment.

Eyewitness accounts shed light on the harrowing ordeal that unfolded as the fire ravaged through the godowns. Sumit Bharadwaj, one such witness, recounted the panic and chaos that ensued following the explosion. “Everyone gathered here after hearing an explosion,” he stated. “We tried a lot to douse the fire. Around 7-8 fire tenders (initially) reached here and started the firefighting operation…”

The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of industrial accidents and underscores the importance of stringent safety measures in industrial settings. As authorities continue their investigation into the cause of the fire, the community mourns the loss of lives and hopes for the swift recovery of those injured in the calamity.
