The Congress party has recently found itself in the midst of political turbulence as former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) and Congress leader, Milind Deora, announced his resignation from the party. What adds to the intrigue is the Congress’s claim that the timing of Deora’s departure was influenced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, dismissing Deora’s expressed concerns over the Mumbai South Lok Sabha seat as a mere ‘farce.’

Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s General Secretary in charge of communications, revealed that Deora had a phone conversation with him on the preceding Friday. During this conversation, Deora expressed a desire to discuss his apprehensions about the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) laying claim to the South Mumbai Lok Sabha seat with Rahul Gandhi.

The South Mumbai Lok Sabha seat holds significant historical importance for the Deora family. Both Milind Deora and his father, Murli Deora, have previously served as Members of Parliament from this constituency. Currently held by Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena (UBT), the seat has become a focal point of contention in Maharashtra politics.

Milind Deora’s decision to resign has not only sent shockwaves through the Congress party but also raised eyebrows as reports suggest his impending move to join the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Alongside Deora, a significant number of former corporators, party office bearers from South Mumbai, and representatives from key business organizations are expected to follow suit and join the Shiv Sena ranks.

Senior Congress leader and former minister Balasaheb Thorat expressed his sentiments on Deora’s resignation, terming it as unfortunate. The Congress party, while acknowledging Deora’s concerns over the Mumbai South Lok Sabha seat, questions the timing of his resignation, hinting at potential external influences.

The Congress’s accusations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi add another layer of complexity to this political saga. Alleging that Modi orchestrated the timing of Deora’s resignation, the Congress contends that this is an unwarranted interference in the party’s internal affairs. While Deora’s concerns are recognized, the Congress party raises questions about the circumstances surrounding his departure, setting the stage for further political deliberations and speculations in the days to come. The unfolding events in Maharashtra politics will undoubtedly be closely watched, as the political landscape continues to evolve with each passing development.
