Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday firmly declared that the controversial Waqf Amendment Act would not be enforced in the state, even as violent protests raged in Murshidabad and other parts of Bengal. She appealed to all communities to maintain peace and refrain from any “unrighteous behaviour in the name of religion.”

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee said, “My sincere appeal to all people of all religions, please remain calm, remain restrained. Do not engage in any unrighteous behaviour in the name of religion. Every human life is precious, do not incite riots for the sake of politics. Those who are inciting riots are harming the society.”

Amid the ongoing tension, she made it clear that the West Bengal government has no intention of enforcing the new law. “Remember, we did not make the law that many are agitated against. The law was made by the central government. So the answer you want should be sought from the central government. We have made our position clear on this matter — we do not support this law. This law will not be implemented in our state. So what is the riot about?” she asked.

Banerjee also cautioned against political provocation, alleging that some parties were trying to use religion for electoral advantage. “Some political parties are trying to misuse religion for political gain. Do not give in to their persuasion,” she wrote, adding that her government would take legal action against those inciting unrest.
