Thane Train Tragedy: CM Fadnavis Calls Incident ‘Very Unfortunate’, High-Level Probe Ordered by Govt

Mumbai: Four passengers, including a Government Railway Police (GRP) constable, lost their lives and six others were injured on Monday morning after falling from an overcrowded local train in Maharashtra’s Thane district. The accident occurred between Diva and Kopar stations on a Kasara-bound train during peak rush hour, once again spotlighting the serious issue of commuter safety on Mumbai’s suburban rail network.

According to railway officials, the mishap likely happened when passengers hanging from the footboards of two overcrowded trains brushed against each other while passing in opposite directions. The exact cause is still under investigation.

In a post on X, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the incident “very unfortunate” and confirmed that an inquiry is already underway. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde added that a high-level committee would be set up to probe the cause of the accident and ensure accountability. Both leaders assured that financial assistance will be extended to the families of the deceased.

The deceased have been identified as:

  • Ketan Saroj
  • Rahul Gupta
  • Mayur Shah
  • Vicky Mukhyad (GRP Constable)

A total of 12 passengers reportedly fell from the train. The train guard raised an alert around 9:30 AM, following which rescue operations were swiftly conducted. The injured were transported to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa and Thane General Hospital by 9:50 AM. Six individuals — four men and two women — are currently under medical treatment.

Deputy CM Ajit Pawar also reacted, calling the tragedy a grim reminder of the dangers posed by extreme overcrowding in local trains. Officials have stressed the urgent need for long-term reforms, including enhanced infrastructure, better crowd control mechanisms, and safety upgrades.
