Tesla Stuns India with Model Y Launch at Rs 59.89 Lakh — 622 KM Range, Netflix Inside, and Self-Driving Add-On

Mumbai: Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its first vehicle, the Model Y, and the opening of its first showroom in Mumbai at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). This marks the beginning of Tesla’s much-anticipated presence in India after years of negotiations. The launch event saw the presence of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, underscoring the significance of the company’s arrival. Tesla also plans to open a second showroom in Delhi soon, with the Model 3 expected to follow later in the year.

The Model Y will be available in two variants for Indian buyers. The Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) model is priced at ₹59.89 lakh, while the Long Range RWD is priced at ₹67.89 lakh. These prices are exclusive of GST and TCS. Additionally, Tesla charges ₹50,000 as an administration and service fee. For those interested in future autonomous driving features, Tesla is offering full self-driving capability at an additional cost of ₹6 lakh. However, the company clarified that these features currently require driver supervision and are dependent on regulatory approval, which may take more time in certain jurisdictions. Updates for these features will be provided via over-the-air software upgrades.

Bookings for the Model Y can be made either at the Mumbai showroom or through Tesla’s official India website. The vehicle’s delivery is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025 and, for now, will be limited to Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. The website also provides a detailed breakdown of taxes and optional features.

The Model Y is available in six color options: Stealth Grey, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Quicksilver, and Ultra Red. Buyers can choose between an all-black interior or a dual-tone black and white finish. The car features a 15.4-inch central touchscreen, ventilated front seats, power-reclining rear seats that fold flat, and an 8-inch touchscreen for rear passengers. It also includes acoustic glass for sound insulation, over nine speakers, and ambient lighting in the footwells and door pockets.

In terms of performance, the RWD variant offers a range of 500 km (WLTP) and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The Long Range RWD offers a 622 km range and reaches 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Tesla’s supercharging feature allows the car to gain up to 238 km of range in just 15 minutes for the RWD model, and up to 267 km for the Long Range variant.

The Model Y comes with several advanced features including heated seats, a heated steering wheel and windshield, an air filtration system, custom driver profiles, a tinted glass roof, and safety features like forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, and lane departure avoidance. Entertainment options include Tesla Theatre with access to Netflix, YouTube, and other streaming services. The vehicle integrates with the Tesla app for remote operations such as locking, unlocking, and climate control. It also includes Dashcam and Sentry Mode features for added security.

  2. More than 200 firefighters are struggling to tackle an out-of-control wildfire on Crete — Greece’s largest island and a tourist hotspot — as authorities order mass evacuations.

The fire broke out Wednesday afternoon near Ierapetra, a town on the island’s southeast coast, amid unusually high temperatures, 3 to 5 degrees Celsius (5.4 to 9 Fahrenheit) above average, and gale-force winds of around 50 miles an hour.

The conditions are creating “new outbreaks, making firefighting work very difficult,” the Fire Department’s press spokesperson, Chief Vasilios Vathrakoyannis, said in a statement Thursday.

More than 230 firefighters, along with 46 vehicles and 10 helicopters have been deployed to fight the blaze, according to fire officials.

The flames have spread rapidly, reaching homes as well as hotels and other tourist accommodations.

Authorities asked residents of four settlements to evacuate and move toward Ierapetra. About 1,500 people have been evacuated so far, according to the Greek public broadcaster ERT.

The Ierapetra municipality has converted an indoor training center facility into a makeshift camp, where hundreds of tourists and residents who abandoned their homes spent the night Wednesday.
The police, medical services and the coast guard have all been called to the area.

“We are entering the third and most difficult month of the fire season,” Vathrakoyannis said. July is typically the hottest month in Greece and is often accompanied by strong winds. “These conditions favor the spread of fires and increase their danger,” he said.
Wildfires have ripped through other European countries this week as the continent endures a brutal heat wave.

Tens of thousands were evacuated in Turkey as blazes ripped through the western Izmir and Manisa provinces and southern Hatay province, damaging nearly 200 homes.

Blazes also broke out in France and in Spain, where two people died.

Europe experiences wildfires every year, but they are becoming more intense and frequent due to human-caused climate change, which fuels heat and drought, both helping set the stage for fierce, destructive fires.
