A potentially explosive situation looms large in Haryana as negotiations between protesting farmers and government authorities hit a dead end. Despite hours of deliberation, mediated by Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Arjun Munda, on Monday, February 13, no common ground could be found on critical issues, notably the minimum support price (MSP) and loan waivers.

This stalemate marks the second unsuccessful attempt at dialogue, following a similar inconclusive meeting on February 8. With tensions escalating, the farmer unions have announced their intent to escalate their protests with a “Delhi Chalo” march, scheduled to commence on February 13.

Sarvan Singh Pandher, a prominent leader of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, expressed disappointment at the lack of progress, emphasizing that the farmers remain steadfast in their demands. The failure to address concerns surrounding MSP and loan waivers has fueled their determination to escalate their agitation.

In anticipation of the looming confrontation, security measures have been significantly heightened across the state. Haryana Police have taken preemptive steps, sealing off major highways and implementing stringent measures to maintain law and order. With a total of 114 companies deployed across various districts, comprising both paramilitary forces and local police units, authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure public safety.

The imposition of Section 144 in 15 districts and the suspension of internet services in seven districts underscore the authorities’ resolve to prevent any untoward incidents. Additionally, advanced surveillance technologies, including drones and CCTV cameras, are being employed to monitor the situation and identify potential instigators.

The strategic sealing of border points, such as the Shambhu barrier on the GT road, and the diversion of traffic on key national highways reflect the proactive measures undertaken to thwart the farmers’ planned march. Similar precautions have been implemented in districts bordering Punjab, including Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Fatehabad, and Sirsa.

As tensions escalate and both sides remain entrenched in their positions, the specter of a direct confrontation looms large. The failure of negotiations underscores the deep-seated grievances of the farmers and the challenges faced by authorities in finding a mutually acceptable resolution. As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on Haryana, where the fate of the ongoing protests hangs in the balance.
