BJP MP Tejasvi Surya has launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, accusing it of giving away Kachchatheevu Island to Sri Lanka in 1974 for political reasons. “This is not the first time the Congress has given away territory. Even with the case of Aksai Chin and, more recently, we learned that the UPA government was willing to give away Siachen to Pakistan. This shows their commitment to the territorial integrity of India,” Surya said in the Lok Sabha.
The BJP MP also referred to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s stance on Kachchatheevu Island, quoting his remark, “I attach no importance at all to this little island and I would have no hesitation in giving up our claim to it.” Surya emphasized that the Congress and its allies had not taken Parliament into confidence regarding such a significant decision that impacted India’s territorial claims.
The attack comes amid a broader political debate on national security and territorial integrity, with the BJP accusing the Congress of undermining India’s interests in several instances. The Kachchatheevu Island, located between India and Sri Lanka, has been a subject of contention, and Surya’s remarks have reignited discussions about historical territorial decisions.
