Tejashwi Yadav, former Deputy Chief Minister and prominent leader of the Rashtriya Jana Dal (RJD), has stirred controversy by asserting that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar harbors intentions to dissolve the Bihar assembly, as per the purported alliance deal with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Yadav’s claims come amidst simmering tensions within the ruling coalition, with allegations of a deepening trust deficit between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal United (JDU).
Speaking at a rally during his Jan Vishwas yatra, Yadav voiced concerns over the delay in cabinet expansion in Bihar, attributing it to the widening gap of distrust between the BJP and JDU. He criticized the state of governance in Bihar, asserting that a government should serve its full term of five years, lamenting Nitish Kumar’s multiple oaths as Chief Minister over the past three years.
Yadav went on to speculate on the potential timing of the assembly elections, suggesting that Nitish Kumar may seek to align them with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in April. He expressed confidence that neither the BJP nor the JDU would secure significant victories in such a scenario, even suggesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi might fail to secure a single Lok Sabha seat.
The prospect of Bihar going to polls alongside the Lok Sabha elections was addressed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) during a recent press conference in Patna. With preparations underway and detailed data on voter demographics provided, the ECI affirmed its readiness to conduct elections in the state.
The constitutional authority to dissolve the Assembly lies with the Governor, who acts upon the advice of the cabinet. Should the Nitish Kumar-led cabinet advise dissolution, the Governor would make the final decision. Subsequently, the Election Commission would oversee the electoral process according to its discretion.
As speculations and political maneuvers unfold in Bihar, the possibility of early elections and its implications for the state’s political landscape remain subjects of intense scrutiny and debate.
