Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief Tarique Rahman, in his first public address after his party’s sweeping electoral victory, urged citizens to rise above political divides and focus on national unity, saying the country’s future depends on collective strength rather than division.

Speaking on Saturday, Rahman said, “Our paths and opinions may differ, but in the interest of the country, we must remain united.” His remarks come as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a decisive mandate in the national elections, positioning him to become the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

According to official figures released by the Election Commission, the BNP won 213 out of 299 contested seats in the Jatiya Sangsad, comfortably crossing the 151-seat threshold required for a majority in the 300-member Parliament. The result marks the party’s return to power after nearly two decades in opposition.

These elections were the first since the 2024 student-led uprising that led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Despite the scale of the victory, the BNP adopted a restrained tone. In a statement issued soon after the results, the party directed supporters to avoid public celebrations. “Despite winning by a large margin, no celebratory procession or rally shall be organised,” the statement said, instead encouraging prayers and reflection.

Rahman’s political journey has been marked by dramatic highs and lows. He began his political career in 1988 at the grassroots level of the BNP and steadily rose through the ranks, eventually becoming senior joint secretary general. He assumed leadership responsibilities when former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was unable to remain active in politics due to imprisonment and health concerns.

In 2008, Rahman left Bangladesh for London, claiming political persecution, and spent nearly 17 years abroad. His return in December 2025 significantly altered the country’s political dynamics, revitalising the BNP’s organisational machinery and consolidating support ahead of the elections.
