Kolkata: Political tensions in West Bengal are rising after suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir moved ahead with the construction of a mosque named “Babri Masjid” in Murshidabad. The foundation stone ceremony is being held with religious rituals, including Quran recitations by a large number of clerics, before construction formally begins later in the day.

According to organisers, preparations at the site in Beldanga have been underway for days. Construction materials, labourers and groundwork arrangements were put in place ahead of the ceremony. The actual building work is expected to start after the religious programme concludes.

Kabir, who now leads the Jan Unnayan Party after his suspension from the Trinamool Congress, has stated that the mosque will be completed within two years. He expressed gratitude to supporters who have stood by him despite criticism and controversy. He also argued that while the construction of temples rarely faces opposition, projects initiated by Muslims often invite resistance. Kabir maintained that the mosque represents the dignity and sentiments of the Muslim community and said he is determined to see the project through.

The project had first drawn attention on December 6, when Kabir formally marked the site with a public gathering attended by thousands. Prayers were offered at the proposed location, followed by a community meal. Since then, the announcement has triggered reactions both within and outside West Bengal.

Several Hindu organisations have strongly objected to the use of the name “Babri Masjid,” calling it provocative. Protests have been held in Delhi, while in Uttar Pradesh some members of Hindu groups attempted to travel to Murshidabad to oppose the move but were stopped by police before leaving the state. Protesters have said they are not against the construction of a mosque but object specifically to the name linked to Babur.
