Supreme Court Takes Suo Moto Cognisance of Struggles Faced by Disabled Military Cadets

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Union government and its key ministries—including Defence, Finance, and Social Justice & Empowerment—seeking responses in a suo moto case concerning the hardships faced by cadets who suffered disabilities during their training and were subsequently relieved from service due to injury.

A bench comprising Justices B.V. Nagarathna and R. Mahadevan initiated the case on its own motion after taking cognisance of a media report highlighting the challenges encountered by disabled trainee cadets in the military. The bench noted that these individuals often face long-term difficulties and a lack of adequate support after being discharged from service.

During Monday’s proceedings, the Court examined multiple issues related to rehabilitation, financial assistance, and institutional support for the affected cadets. Counsel representing the government ministries were asked to deliberate on these concerns and provide comprehensive responses at the next hearing scheduled for September 4, 2025.
