The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government, asking it to respond to the plea filed by former minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan and his son, Abdullah Azam Khan. The duo has challenged the Allahabad High Court’s decision to deny their bail in a 2022 road-cleaning machine theft case.

A bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and Aravind Kumar heard the matter and directed the Uttar Pradesh government to file its reply. The court was responding to the petition challenging the Allahabad High Court’s September order rejecting their bail applications.

The theft case, registered in 2022, accuses Azam Khan and others of stealing a road-cleaning machine belonging to the Rampur Nagar Palika Parishad. The machine was reportedly recovered from Rampur’s Jauhar University, a prominent institution linked to Khan.
