New Delhi: In a significant directive aimed at improving road safety and preventing accidents, the Supreme Court of India on Friday ordered all States, Union Territories, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and civic bodies to ensure the immediate removal of stray cattle from national and state highways, as well as other public roads.
The apex court expressed serious concern over the rising number of road accidents caused by stray animals, particularly cattle, on major highways. It emphasized that the responsibility of ensuring safe and obstruction-free roads lies jointly with state authorities, municipal bodies, and highway agencies.
The bench further directed all States and Union Territories to constitute dedicated highway patrol teams tasked with identifying and removing stray animals from roads. These animals are to be relocated to shelter homes (gaushalas), where they will be properly fed and cared for in humane conditions.
