Mumbai: In a major decision the state cabinet at its meeting held on Wednesday approved the proposal of adding 9 more wards in the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). By addition of 9 wards, now the total wards will now be 236, which was earlier 227. Accordingly, the BMC will now have 236 councillors instead of 227. It is said that the delimitation work of the municipal wards will be completed soon.

Determination of wards on the basis of census

According to the information received, the ward has been expanded keeping in view the increasing population of Mumbai.  Also, on the basis of the census conducted every 10 years, the number of corporators is determined by the Urban Development Department in proportion to the population in the Municipal Corporation. The current number of corporators of BMC has been determined on the basis of 2011 census data.

Decision in the cabinet meeting

Meanwhile, the results of the 2021 census have not yet been released yet due to the increasing prevalence of Coronavirus in the state. It is also said that while increasing the number of corporators, the political advantage and its calculations are also kept in view. Therefore, it is being speculated that this decision has been taken in the cabinet meeting regarding increasing the number of corporators in Mumbai.

Bhalchandra Shirsat raised questions on this decision of the state government, The number of corporators in Mumbai Municipality has been increased from 227 to 236. Why only nine members? What is the basis of this population? What is the basis of the census? This question has been asked by BJP spokesperson Bhalchandra Shirsat. The Shiv Sena in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has decided to change the number of corporators to postpone the forthcoming elections only for political convenience.

Earlier, the state cabinet had decided to increase the number of seats in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation by 9 per cent. Now they have realised, will we win this election by messing up the ward structure? So, realising that the innings will not be successful, now the number of wards should be increased by nine, so that you will be free to complete the restructuring of the wards. The MVA government and Shiv Sena have decided to increase the number to nine only for political purposes.
