New Delhi:
Lok Sabha
will take up the proposed amendment to the Special Protection Group (SPG) Act
next week, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said on Friday.
Elite SPG commandos protect the prime minister and his/her
immediate family, former prime ministers and their immediate family for a
certain period depending on the threat perception. While listing out the government’s business for next
week in Lok Sabha, Meghwal said besides other bills, the SPG (Amendment) Bill
will also be introduced.
Earlier in the week, on November 19, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had raised the issue of withdrawal of SPG security cover to the Gandhi family in the Lok Sabha, but the government said he cannot raise the matter in Zero Hour as he had not given a notice for the same. After the notice of adjournment motion given by the party on the withdrawal of Special Protection Group (SPG) cover to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and former party president Rahul Gandhi which was then rejected by Speaker Om Birla, Chowdhury raised the issue in the Zero Hour.
