Mumbai: Kolhapur’s Shivaji University has awarded a PhD to Dr. Deepak Sawant for his research on the socio-political impact of the COVID-19 pandemic with a special focus on Maharashtra. His thesis highlights various critical aspects of the pandemic’s effects, including its impact on health infrastructure, online education, economy, trade, and election processes.

Dr. Sawant’s research sheds light on the challenges faced by the healthcare system, the role of the Election Commission during the pandemic, and how election rallies and campaigning contributed to the virus’s spread. Comparing India’s election process with that of the United States, he noted that the Trump administration strategically implemented infection-free balloting measures by enforcing strict safety protocols at polling booths.

His study also delves into the vaccination process, the global vaccine race, and the frequently changing guidelines issued by the WHO, which he found to be confusing at times. Additionally, he examines the role of political leaders in managing the crisis, particularly in addressing public distress, ensuring oxygen and vaccine supplies, and enforcing mask mandates.

Dr. Sawant’s research focuses on key issues such as health infrastructure, medicine supply, quarantine policies, lockdowns, the Janata Curfew, and the struggles of migrant workers.

Under the guidance of Dr. Prakash Pawar, this marks Dr. Sawant’s second PhD, his first being in Hospital Administration, with a case study on J.J. Hospital.
