The process to fill vacant positions within the Election Commission of India gained momentum as the search committee forwarded a list of candidates to the election committee on Thursday. Among the ten names put forward are distinguished individuals such as former Enforcement Directorate (ED) chief Sanjay Kumar Mishra (IRS), NIA chief Dinkar Gupta, former CBDT chief PC Modi (IRS), JB Mohapatra (IRS), and Radha S Chauhan (IAS).

Today, the Election Committee, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to convene to finalize the appointment of two Election Commissioners. Law Minister Arjun Meghwal has also been summoned for this crucial meeting, where Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, will participate.

With two vacant posts in the Election Commission, Law Minister Arjun Meghwal previously chaired a meeting to shortlist candidates to fill these crucial roles. Upon selection, President Draupadi Murmu will officially appoint the new members of the Election Commission, marking the first appointment under the newly enacted law.

The retirement of Anoop Chandra Pandey on February 14 and the sudden resignation of Arun Goyal on March 8 have left these positions vacant. Goyal’s resignation was accepted on March 9, leaving Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar as the sole member of the commission. The recent law reformulates the process of appointing the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners, deviating from the traditional method where appointments were made by the President based on government recommendations.

This development underscores the importance of a robust and impartial Election Commission in upholding the integrity of India’s democratic processes. As the selection process progresses, the nation awaits the appointment of qualified individuals who will safeguard the democratic principles of the country.
