Delhi: Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday strongly criticised what he described as “improper and unacceptable” arrangements reportedly made for a senior official of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). Calling the episode a clear breach of established norms, the minister confirmed that a formal show-cause notice has been served and strict action may follow.
Minister Calls Conduct “Unacceptable”
The controversy revolves around elaborate preparations allegedly made for BSNL Director Vivek Bansal during a proposed trip to Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. When questioned by reporters, Scindia said he had already made his stand clear.
“Such conduct is improper and a violation of established rules and traditions. It is unacceptable and shocking,” the minister said. He added that a show-cause notice had been issued, giving the director seven days to respond. “We will take appropriate action after examining the reply,” he stated firmly.
Scindia emphasized that the era of “royal culture” in public service is over and that government officials are expected to maintain discipline and accountability.
Detailed Arrangements Spark Outrage
The issue surfaced after an internal document reportedly detailed extensive logistical arrangements for the visit. An order issued by a deputy general manager allegedly assigned nearly 50 staff members across two days to manage over 20 separate responsibilities linked to the trip.
The plan reportedly included arrangements for a boat ride, temple visits, and a ceremonial dip at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj. Staff were also tasked with preparing bathing kits containing towels, oil, combs, and even clothing items. Additional duties included arranging vehicles, refreshments, photography, and personal assistance services.
The document quickly circulated on social media, drawing widespread criticism over the scale of preparations and the apparent use of public resources for what appeared to be a largely personal visit.
Visit Cancelled Amid Backlash
Following public outrage, the proposed visit was reportedly cancelled. The development has intensified scrutiny on BSNL, which has been facing financial strain in recent quarters.
While the telecom company has yet to issue a detailed public clarification, the Communications Ministry has signaled zero tolerance for any misuse of authority or resources. With the show-cause notice now issued, further disciplinary steps may depend on the explanation submitted by the official concerned.
The incident has once again sparked debate about accountability and ethical conduct within public sector undertakings, especially at a time when fiscal discipline and transparency remain under sharp public focus.
