Kolkata: In a significant development, the Additional District and Sessions Court in Sealdah, Kolkata, on Saturday convicted Sanjay Roy, the accused in the gruesome RG Kar rape and murder case. The court’s verdict comes nearly five months after the shocking crime that occurred at the state-run RG Kar Hospital in North Kolkata on August 9, 2024.
Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was found guilty of raping and murdering a post-graduate trainee doctor. The victim’s tragic death had sparked widespread outrage and drawn attention to the safety of healthcare workers.
During the court proceedings, Roy vehemently denied the charges and claimed that he had been falsely implicated. “I have not committed this crime. I am being wrongfully accused. Those responsible for this crime are walking free, including an IPS officer involved in the case,” Roy asserted, as reported by ANI.
The Sealdah Court has reserved its decision on the quantum of punishment, which will be announced on January 20. Additional District Judge of the Sealdah Court stated that Roy’s defense will be heard on Monday before the sentence is pronounced.
Roy was convicted under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of rape and murder, in connection with the horrifying incident that left the medical community and the public shocked.
