Sanjay Raut Slams Trump’s Tariff Threats Over Russian Oil, Questions Modi Govt’s Silence

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Monday came down heavily on US President Donald Trump over his recent remarks threatening to substantially raise tariffs on India for its continued purchase and resale of Russian oil on the global market.

Reacting sharply to Trump’s statement, Raut said, “Trump has been threatening India repeatedly. But our Prime Minister and government are not ready to say a word on this. Who is President Trump to put pressure on India?”

The outspoken Rajya Sabha MP further added, “No Russian or American president has ever spoken this way about India before. This is not just about trade — it’s about India’s sovereignty and our right to pursue independent foreign policy.”

Trump, during a recent address in the United States, alleged that India was “buying massive amounts of Russian oil and selling it on the open market,” and vowed to “substantially raise tariffs” on Indian goods if he returns to power.

“Trump’s remarks are not just a threat to our economy but also an insult to our national dignity. The Modi government must respond firmly. Remaining silent sends the wrong signal to the world,” Raut emphasized.
