Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, remains tense following the violent clashes on November 24, 2023, in the Kot Garvi locality during a survey of the historic Mughal-era Jama Masjid. The incident led to the deaths of four people due to gunfire, while several others, including police personnel, sustained injuries.
As preparations for ‘Alvida’ (the last Friday of Ramzan) prayers are underway, authorities have announced measures to ensure public safety. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shreesh Chandra clarified that there are no restrictions on offering namaz in the traditional manner. However, large gatherings on rooftops have been prohibited to prevent potential accidents.
“During a peace committee meeting, some people inquired about offering namaz on rooftops. It was clarified that while prayers can be offered normally, assembling in large numbers on rooftops poses safety risks and is therefore discouraged,” ASP Chandra stated.
Additionally, authorities have reinforced the long-standing rule prohibiting namaz on roads, citing safety concerns and potential traffic disruptions. “For several years, authorities have ensured that namaz is not offered on roads, and this rule remains unchanged this year as well,” he added.
ASP Chandra also addressed concerns about loudspeakers in mosques, confirming that mosques with small loudspeakers will continue their practice without interference.
Regarding reports that Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Zia-ur-Rahman Barq may approach the Allahabad High Court over the namaz regulations, ASP Chandra reiterated that no one is being prevented from praying traditionally.
