Mumbai: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Nitesh Rane on Monday alleged that suspended Mumbai Police officer Sachin Waze used to extort money from bookies. He further alleged that Shiv Sena Environment Minister Aditya Thackeray’s close aide Varun Sardesai also called Waze for his share from the extortion money.

“IPL was started for youth but then betting started. Waze had called these people who were betting just before the matches. These people would obviously be afraid. He used to tell them if you don’t want to get arrested then give us 1.5 crores. Either give it in full or I will raid you,” claimed Nitesh Rane.

Recently Sachin Waze was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is investigating the February 25 bomb scare outside Antilia, the south Mumbai residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani.

A Mumbai court on Sunday remanded Waze in the NIA’s custody till March 25.

Waze was arrested under IPC sections 286 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) section 465 IPC (forgery), section 473 IPC (making or possessing counterfeit seal with intent to commit forgery), section 506(2) IPC (criminal intimidation), section 120-B IPC (criminal conspiracy) and relevant provisions of the Explosive Substances Act, a police official earlier said.

In its remand plea, the NIA submitted statements of witnesses to show Waze’s involvement in the case. Waze, a 1990-batch officer of the state cadre, was earlier also suspended in 2004 over his role in the custodial death of a 2002 Ghatkopar blast suspect Khwaja Yunus and was reinstated last year.
