Moscow: In a significant display of diplomatic outreach, Russia held high-level discussions with both India and Pakistan in the wake of the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir on April 22, which claimed the lives of several Indian citizens.

On May 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. President Putin expressed heartfelt condolences over the tragic loss of life resulting from the barbaric terrorist attack, and both leaders strongly emphasized the need for an uncompromising global fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

The conversation also underscored the strategic, time-tested, and specially privileged partnership between Russia and India. Both leaders affirmed that this relationship remains robust, dynamic, and resistant to external pressures.

Prime Minister Modi extended greetings on the upcoming 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and confirmed that India would be represented at the commemorative events in Moscow, calling it a shared moment of pride. Modi also reiterated his invitation to President Putin to visit India for the annual bilateral summit, which was warmly accepted.

A day earlier, on May 4, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, following a request from Islamabad. The two leaders discussed key aspects of Russia-Pakistan cooperation and also addressed the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam incident.

The Russian side conveyed its deep concern over the deteriorating regional security environment and expressed readiness to assist in facilitating a political settlement — but only if both New Delhi and Islamabad are open to such mediation.

Russia’s balanced engagement with both South Asian nuclear powers reflects its ongoing commitment to regional stability, while simultaneously reinforcing its strategic ties with India and maintaining constructive dialogue with Pakistan.
