Russia developing new seaport to increase trade with Iran

New Delhi: With intent to increase its trade with Iran, Russia will construct a new seaport in its Kalmykia region. The decision to develop the port comes three months after a telephonic conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Hasan Rouhani, wherein the leaders had to assured each other to not only maintain strong ties but also expand the bilateral trade relations.

According to reports, the new port will have a capacity of 12.5 million tons. It will consist of 32 off-loading terminals and other facilities, such as large-scale commercial elevators. The port will also house a 300,000 tons capacity of simultaneous storage for grain crops. Provisions are also been made for storing and shipping vegetable oils, fruits, vegetables, and other goods.

The grain and container terminals will have a capacity of five million tons each, while the liquid cargo terminal will have a capacity of 500,000 tons, the same report added.

While Moscow is fast-tracking its development of the new seaport, Tehran is also working on war-footing to speed up its multi-modal connectivity with Russia involving highways, commercial freight rail corridor, and dedicated sea routes.

Rouhani-led government has announced its preparedness to develop customs “Green Corridor” with Moscow on the pandemic occasion when many international activities have been brought to lockdown. Highlighting the close and strategic relations between Iran and Russia in recent years, The Iranian President highlighted the urgency to develop bilateral relations and cooperation, especially in the fields of trade, economy, science, and medicine.

As reported, the next meeting of the Joint Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation in September 2020.  Apart from Iran, the new seaport by Russia will also allow it to increase its trade ties via connecting the operating ports of India, and Kazakhstan.
