New Delhi: Coming to the aid of Iran, which has been subjected to severe economic and political sanctions by the United States, Russia has called upon world leaders to discuss the situation for a troubled Tehran. Russian President Vladimir Putin has pitched that the leaders of nuclear power nations must hold a video conference to discuss the future of the Iran nuclear deal and critical security situation developing in the Gulf.

Russia’s stance was officially published on the Kremlin website on August 14 reading that Putin said this was necessary because ‘discussions of the Iran issue in the UN Security Council are becoming increasingly tense’ and there is the risk of ’emergence of a conflict’.

Reading further the statement added that ‘groundless accusations are being made against Iran. Resolutions aimed at destroying earlier unanimous Security Council decisions are being drawn up’.

Moscow, which continues to defend Tehran against the western onslaught led by President Donald Trump-led administration also added that ‘taking this into account, we propose to hold as soon as possible an online meeting of the heads of state of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, involving the leaders of Germany and Iran as well. The objective is to draw up steps that would allow us to avoid confrontation and an exacerbation of the situation in the UN Security Council’.

Referring to the nuclear deal by its formal title, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the release said, ‘it is important to provide collective support for the continued uninterrupted implementation of UN Security Resolution 2231, which created international legal grounds for the implementation of the JCPOA’.

As per the 2015 deal, Tehran has agreed to limit its nuclear activities and allow in international inspectors in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions. Meanwhile, in 2018, Trump withdrew the US from the agreement and reinstated sanctions. Reeling under severe economic crisis, Iran under President Hassan Rouhani suspended its commitments under the agreement.
