Security agencies in the first 4 months of the current Iranian calendar year have seized a total of 400 tons of narcotics from various provinces of the country

New Delhi: In a major crackdown on a suspected international drug cartel, the Iranian security agencies on 13 August seized over one ton of narcotics from the southern region of the country. The latest seizure comes on the heels of the Iranian security agencies recovering more than 19 tonnes of various drugs in a week’s time.
According to reports, police forces of the Sistan and Baluchestan province, southeastern Iran seized the big haul of narcotics in Iranshahr, weighing over 1.33 tons.
Acting on an Intel input, the police teams tracked the massive shipment transported from the southern provinces of Iran. Police have arrested two members of an international drug-trafficking cartel.
Reports indicated that the 1.33 tons of haul comprised 1.31 tons of Opium, 7 kilograms of Heroin, and 15 kilograms of Hashish. Local media quoted Deputy Police Chief of Sistan and Baluchestan Province Second Brigadier General Ahmad Taheri saying that his team had engaged in an armed clash with the smugglers, during which the drugs, along with two AK-47 assault rifles, were seized.
400 Tons of Drugs in Four Months
Reeling under international sanctions, dwindling economic conditions, and rising COVID-19 infections – Iran is at the forefront of a large-scale international drug racket.
According to Iran’s Deputy Head of Police Brigadier General Ghasem Rezaei, a total of 400 tons of narcotics have been seized by police forces in Iran in the first 4 months of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 20, 2020).

Rezaei highlighted that the seized drug figured indicates a 45 percent growth as compared to the 2019 corresponding period. He claimed that the Iranian security agencies are vigorously pursuing the fight against international drug cartels.
